Lady Maroons sweep pair from Paris
| Hot bats and strong pitching propelled Robinson High School's softball team to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Paris in the home opener for the Lady Maroons Saturday, March 23.|
Robinson cruised to an 8-1 win in the first game, then completed the sweep with a 10-0 whipping of the Lady Tigers in the nightcap.
"Our defense did the job again, despite not being out side all week on the diamond," RHS head coach Larry Hilderbrand said. "On offense, we put the ball in play getting runners on base, then were able to move them into scoring position and get the hit when we needed it."
In game one, Robinson took control early with a four-run first inning, then added another run in the second for a 5-0 lead. Paris scored in the third to make the score 5-1, but Robinson tacked on a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to pull away for the win.
Kyndal Mendenhall led RHS at the plate with three singles and three runs scored, while Parker Corder doubled and singled. Connor York added a double and a run batted in, Jasmine Brooks singled, drove in two runs and scored a run, Ashlyn Sullivan singled and scored twice, Olivia Hickey added a base hit, a run batted in and a run scored, Karnell Bowen drove in a run and Kinsey Fear scored a run.
Corder picked up the win on the mound, allowing one run on three hits, while walking two and striking out seven in seven innings of work.
"Parker threw another good game for us for not pitching to live batters since last Saturday," Hilderbrand said. "She kept Paris off balance all day."
In game two, Robinson again took control early, this time scoring three runs in their first at-bat and adding another run in the second for a 4-0 lead. The Lady Maroons then added two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth to run away with the easy win.
The game was stopped in the bottom of the sixth due to the 10-run rule.
Sullivan paced the RHS offense with a home run, two singles, three runs batted in and three runs scored, while Sonnie Givens posted a base hit and three runs batted in. Hickey added two singles, a run batted in and a run scored, Mendenhall singled twice and scored a run, Fear singled and scored two runs, Madison Bayless and Allison McGahey had a base hit and a run scored apiece, York and Courtney Callaway each had a hit and Bowen scored a run.
"Ashlyn had a big day at the plate," Hilderbrand said. "When she gets on base, things happen. She is very aggressive on the bases and that's what I like to see."
Bayless took care of the rest on the mound, allowing five hits and one walk while striking out one in six scoreless innings to earn the win.
"Madison threw well," Hilderbrand said. " She had her defense behind here as well. We had girls diving all over the place. Mallory Kent made a great diving catch in right field."
