Lady Statesmen split twinbill at SWIC
Sports Editor

One was better than none for Lincoln Trail College's softball team Tuesday.

After being swept in their first Great Rivers Athletic Conference doubleheader of the season last week, the Lady Statesmen managed to salvage a split in their league twinbill at Southwestern Illinois College.

Lincoln Trail dropped the first game, 6-2, then rebounded to win the nightcap, 7-4, snapping a three-game losing streak in the process.

In game one, the Lady Statesmen gave up two runs in each of the first two innings for a 4-0 deficit and they never recovered. The margin increased to 5-0 after SWIC plated a run in the fourth inning, while LTC finally got on the scoreboad with a run in the fifth. However, SWIC got the run back with another tally in the bottom of the fifth, then LTC scored another run in the top of the sixth to complete the scoring.

Kayla Carrillo led the LTC offense with a double, a single and a run batted in, while Darien Huffman singled and knocked in a run. Kelsey Maus posted a base hit and a run scored, Alizah Cannon added a double and Keeley Hutchinson-Sanders had a single.

Kayla Downing took the loss on the mound, allowing six runs - three earned - on 11 hits, while walking three and striking out two in six innings of work.

In the second game, the Lady Statesmen again fell behind early, as SWIC plated a run in the first inning for a 1-0 lead, but this time they were able to recover. Lincoln Trail responded with three runs in the third to take the lead for good, then added two more runs in the fourth to extend their advantage to 5-1, before Southwestern Illinois got a run back in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 5-2. The Lady Statesmen tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh for a 7-2 lead, while SWIC got two runs back in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate, but Lincoln Trail was able to get the final out to preserve the win.

Hillary Keller led LTC at the plate with two singles, three runs batted in and a run scored, while Jasmyne Thomas singled twice, drove in two runs and scored a run. Hutchinson-Sanders tripled, singled twice and scored a run, Maus added two hits and a run scored, Shayla Hughes had a base hit and a run batted in, Cannon and Andrea Rivera each singled and scored a run and Huffman scored a run.

Hutchinson-Sanders earned the win on the mound, giving up four runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits, while walking five and striking out eight in seven innings of work.
