Lady Statesmen drop pair at Kaskaskia
JOSH BROWN

Scoring one run in 12 innings of play is not a good formula for success.

Just ask Lincoln Trail College's softball team.

The Lady Statesmen struggled both offensively and defensively Wednesday, on their way to being swept in a doubleheader at Kaskaskia, 10-0 and 6-1, in Great Rivers Athletic Conference play.

While they only scored one run in two games, the Lady Statesmen also had trouble fielding the ball, as they made seven errors, which led to nine unearned runs.

In game one, Lincoln Trail gave up four runs in the second and five more in the third to dig a 9-0 hole, then Kaskaskia tacked on one more in the fourth. The game was stopped after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Offensively, the Lady Statesmen had just three hits - all of them singles. Alizah Cannon, Kelsey Maus and Kayla Burner posted a base hit apiece for LTC.

Kayla Downing took the loss on the mound, allowing 10 runs - five earned - on eight hits, while walking five and striking out two in four innings.

In the second game, Lincoln Trail scored their only run of the day in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead, but it was shortlived. Kaskaskia countered with a run in the bottom of the first to even the score, then added a single run in the second to take a 2-1 lead. Kaskaskia then plated two runs in the third and two more in the fifth to pull away for the win.

Lincoln Trail did outhit Kaskaskia in the second game, 9-8, but all of them were singles.

Shayla Hughes led the LTC offense with two singles and a run batted in, while Sydney Lingafelter singled three times. Kayla Carrillo posted a single and a run scored and Keeley Hutchinson-Sanders, Darien Huffman and Andrea Rivera added a base hit apiece.

Hutchinson-Sanders suffered the loss on the mound, giving up six runs - two earned - on eight hits, while walking six and striking out two in six innings.

Lincoln Trail (2-6, 0-2 GRAC) will play at Southwestern Illinois College for a GRAC doubleheader Tuesday at 2 p.m.
