Statesmen sweep DH from Spoon River
Sports Editor

Playing a day early did not seem to affect Lincoln Trail College's baseball team Tuesday.

The Statesmen rolled past visiting Spoon River for a doubleheader sweep, winning 4-1 and 13-4, in a twinbill that was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but was moved ahead due to threat of declining weather conditions.

In game one, Lincoln Trail broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the third inning, then tacked on two more runs in the fifth for a 4-0 advantage. Spoon River scored their lone run in the sixth inning, but the Statesmen were able to hold them off and pick up the win.

Matt Rodgers led LTC at the plate with a triple and a double, while Mike Konyensi posted a single, two runs scored and a run batted in. Former Robinson High School standout Ryder Brannon netted a base hit and two runs scored and Connor Walters added a double and a run batted in.

Tyler Miller earned the win on the mound, allowing one run on two hits in six innings. He also walked three and struck out three. Eric Stapleton pitched a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout to get the save.

In the nightcap, Lincoln Trail struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning and the score remained 1-0 until the fifth. Spoon River took their first lead of the way with a four-run fifth, but LTC closed the gap to 4-3 with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Statesmen then took control in the sixth, erupting for 10 runs to take a 13-4 lead and cruised to the win.

Rodgers again paced the Lincoln Trail offense with a triple, a double, four runs batted in and a run scored, while Scott West singled twice, drove in two runs and scored two runs. Diamyn Hall posted a double, three runs scored and two runs batted in, Andrew Solliday doubled, knocked in a run and scored a run, Connor Robinson singled, scored twice and drove in a run, Brannon added a base hit, a run batted in and a run scored and Konyensi, Walters and Justin Watts each had a single and a run scored.

Kodie Girton picked up the win in relief, giving up one run on no hits, while walking three and striking out five. Jimmy Lough started and went four-plus innings, allowing one run on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Tanner Seitzinger also pitched for LTC, allowing two runs on two hits and did not retire any of the three batters he faced.

Lincoln Trail (9-9) will play at Wabash Valley College for a Great Rivers Athletic Conference contest Friday at 1:30 p.m., then will host Wabash Valley for a GRAC doubleheader Saturday at noon.
