Statesmen baseball splits four to end trip
The annual Spring Trip to Florida ended in similar fashion to how it started for Lincoln Trail College's baseball team - with a split.
After playing 10 games in a six-day span, the Statesmen concluded their trip to Panama City with a 6-4 record.
In the five days they played doubleheaders, the Statesmen never lost both games, as they came away with splits four times and picked up a sweep on the other.
On Monday, Lincoln Trail dropped a 14-2 decision to Kankakee Community College, but rebounded to defeat Kalamazoo Valley College 7-3.
Against Kankakee, the Statesmen grabbed a 1-0 lead with a run in the first inning, but Kankakee struck for five runs in the second to take the lead. Lincoln Trail got a run back in the third, but Kankakee scored once in the fifth, five times in the sixth and three more in the seventh to pull away for the win.
Mike Konyensi led LTC at the plate with a single and a run batted in, while Max Cain and Matt Rodgers posted a base hit and a run scored apiece. Andrew Solliday, Brian Solliday and Tim Hawkins-Hodgson also each had a single for the Statesmen.
Josh Weisman took the loss, allowing six runs on four hits, while walking four and striking out five in four and one-third innings. Tanner Seitzinger gave up five runs - three earned - on three hits and one walk in an inning of relief and Andrew Solliday allowed three runs on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts in one and two-thirds innings.
Against Kalamazoo Valley, the game was scoreless until Kalamazoo Valley pushed across a run in the bottom of the fourth. Lincoln Trail tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth, but Kalamazoo Valley answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Statesmen responded with a four-run eighth inning to grab a 5-2 lead, then added a pair of insurance runs in the ninth. Kalamazoo Valley added a run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Statesmen were able to hold on for the win.
Connor Walters topped the LTC offense with a double, a single and two runs scored, while Ryder Brannon posted a double and two runs batted in. Konyensi and Rodgers each doubled, drove in a run and scored a run, Connor Robinson singled and scored two runs, Scott West added a base hit and a run scored and Hawkins-Hodgson and A.J. Hyatt had a single apiece.
Justin Watts picked up the win in relief, giving up one run on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts in four innings of work. Eric Stapleton started and went five innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits, while walking five and striking out two.
On Tuesday, Lincoln Trail edged Vincennes University 9-8, then lost a slugfest to Alabama Southern, 11-10.
Against Vincennes, Lincoln Trail was down 2-1 after an inning of play, then Vincennes tacked on a run in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead. The Statesmen responded with three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-3 lead, but Vincennes countered with four runs in their half of the inning to regain the lead, 7-4. Lincoln Trail came back with a four-run seventh to take an 8-7 lead, but Vincennes tied the game with a run in the bottom of the inning. Lincoln Trail was able to push across another run in the eighth and held on for the win.
Andrew Solliday led LTC at the plate with a home run and three runs batted in, while Rodgers added a solo home run, a single and two runs scored. Brannon singled twice, drove in three runs and scored a run, Cain singled three times and scored a run, Brian Solliday singled and scored two runs, West had a base hit and a run scored, Robinson and Seth Lunsford each singled and Austin Lewis scored a run and drove in a run.
Rodgers also earned the win in relief, giving up just one hit and one walk with three strikeouts in one and one-third innings. Ryan Wells started and went three and one-third innings, allowing three runs on two hits, while walking two and striking out five. Kodie Girton tossed two innings, allowing one run on two hits with one walk and two strikeouts and Zachary Dowden gave up four unearned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two in one and one-third innings.
Against Alabama Southern, the Statesmen were down 1-0 after an inning of play, but a six-run top of the third gave LTC a 6-3 lead. Alabama Southern responded with three runs in their half of the third and three more in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead, but Lincoln Trail came back with a run in the top of the fifth to tie the game. However, Alabama Southern put up three more runs in the fifth to grab a 10-7 lead, only to see Lincoln Trail come right back with three runs in the top of the sixth to even the score at 10-10. But, Alabama Southern would plate a run in the bottom of the sixth and held on for the win.
Andrew Solliday led LTC at the plate with a home run, three runs batted in and two runs scored, while Brian Solliday homered and drove in two runs. Konyensi posted three hits and a run scored, West singled twice and scored two runs, Cain doubled, drove in a run and scored a run, Watts doubled and scored twice, Rodgers singled and scored a run and Brannon had a base hit.
Tanner Seitzinger suffered the loss on the mound, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two in an inning of relief. Jimmy Lough started and went three and two-thirds innings, giving up seven runs - four earned - on eight hits, while walking one and striking out two. Tyler Wells tossed an inning and a third in relief, allowing three runs on three hits and two walks.
