Statesmen beat Lewis & Clark, 73-53

A big second half for Lincoln Trail College's men's basketball team turned a close game into a rout Wednesday night.

The Statesmen nearly doubled up host Lewis and Clark Community College after halftime, turning a one-point halftime lead into a 73-53 victory for the Statesmen on the road in non-conference action.

The victory also snapped a three-game losing streak for the Statesmen and brought them back to the .500 mark on the season.

The game was close for the first 20 minutes, as Lincoln Trail held a slim, one-point lead, 32-31, at halftime. However, the Statesmen broke the game open in the second half, outscoring Lewis and Clark 41-22 over the final 20 minutes to run away with the victory.

Efficient shooting played a big role in the win for the Statesmen, as they made half of their field goal attempts (26-52), including 18-33 from two-point range (55 percent) and 8-19 from three-point range (42 percent). Meanwhile, Lewis and Clark connected on just 14-46 shots from the floor (30 percent), which included 11-39 from inside the arc (28 percent) and 3-7 from long distance (43 percent). Both teams struggled at the free throw line, as LTC was 13-27 (48 percent), while Lewis and Clark made 22-36 foul shots (61 percent).

Dennis Hightower led LTC with 13 points, six rebounds, five assists, two steals and one blocked shot, while Nick Painter totaled 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. John Bootz posted 10 points, two rebounds, one steal and one blocked shot, Jake Newton netted nine points, three rebounds and one assist, Jesse Tesmer contributed seven points, four rebounds and one steal, Jordan Houser collected seven points, two rebounds and one assist, Caleb Begle registered five points, five rebounds and two assists, Jacob Duncan chipped in with three points, six assists, one steal and one blocked shot, Adam Hendrix recorded three points, four rebounds and one steal, Ron Dietz added three points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal and Daryll Walker had three points, one rebound and one assist.

Stephen McCarty led Lewis and Clark with 17 points, two rebounds and two assists, while Chris Kohnert posted 11 points and five rebounds.

Lincoln Trail (11-11) will play host to Lake Land College for a Great Rivers Athletic Conference contest Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
