Lady Maroons fall to Lawrenceville, 48-43

The third time was the charm, but that was not good news for Robinson High School's girls' basketball team.

Robinson took to the court for the third time this season against Little Illini Conference rival Lawrenceville in Monday's opening-round game of the Class 2A Marshall Regional with two wins over the Lady Indians already in their back pocket.

Unfortunately, the Lady Maroons could not complete the season sweep, as they dropped a 48-43 decision to Lawrenceville to bring their season to a close.

Robinson was short-handed for their postseason opener, as senior starters Ashlyn Sullivan and Brittany Quick were unable to play. Still, the Lady Maroons hung tough and were in the game until the very end, but came up just short.

"I know these girls are going to fight each night and they did," RHS head coach Dave Holubek said. "They battled and to be in the game like we were, I am very proud of them."

The Lady Maroons started well, as they put together an 8-2 run after Lawrenceville scored the first basket of the game to take an 8-4 lead with 2:55 left in the opening period and still held an 11-9 edge at the end of the period.

Robinson struggled in the second quarter, missing their first seven shots while going scoreless for the first 4:33 of the period. During that span, Lawrenceville scored five straight points to take a 14-11 lead, before Tessa Laino ended the drought for RHS with two free throws at the 3:27 mark to close the gap to 14-13. Lawrenceville would extend their lead to 18-13 with 2:40 remaining, but five straight points by Kyndal Mendenhall in a 15-second span tied the game at 18-18 with 1:37 to play. However, Lawrenceville would regain the lead, 19-18, on a free throw by Kourtney Osmon with 27.3 seconds left and the Lady Indians would hold that margin at halftime.

Two free throws by Emily Calip put the Lady Maroons back in front, 20-19, at the 7:19 mark of the third quarter, but a 6-1 Lawrenceville run put the Lady Indians back on top, 25-21, with 3:15 remaining. A basket by Calip closed the gap to two with 3:05 to go, but Lawrenceville would scored the next five points to take their biggest lead of the game, 30-23, with 58.6 seconds remaining. However, Calip banked in a three-pointer at the buzzer to pull the Lady Maroons to within 30-26 heading into the final period.

Lawrenceville still held a seven-point lead, 36-29, with 6:35 to play, but a three-pointer by Mendenhall at the 6:15 mark sparked a 7-0 RHS run to tie the game. Calip sank two free throws with 5:50 remaining to close the gap to 36-34, then after Lawrenceville's Cailyn Andrews and Calip each missed two attempts at the free throw line, Calip sank two more after a Lawrenceville turnover to even the score at 36-36 with 5:07 left. Lawrenceville's Kazia Frederick scored her only basket of the game to put the Lady Indians back on top, 38-36, with 4:50 on the clock, but Calip responded with consecutive baskets to put Robinson on top, 40-38, with 3:43 to play.

However, Lawrenceville would make four of six free throws over the next 1:18 to regain the lead, 42-40, with 2:25 left. Laino would answer for the Lady Maroons with a deep jumper from the baseline to tie the game, but Osmon came right back for Lawrenceville with a jumper from the top of the key to put the Lady Indians in front for good, 44-42, with 1:48 remaining. Mendenhall would make a free throw with 1:31 to go, pulling RHS within one, then the Lady Maroons had a chance to regain the lead after Lawrenceville's McKenzi Kelly missed two free throws with 58.6 seconds left. Unfortunately, Maralee Birkofer's shot from near the free throw line was off the mark and the ball went out of bounds to Lawrenceville with 13.7 seconds left.

Abby Higginbotham then hit two free throws with 10.9 seconds left to give Lawrenceville a three-point lead, then Calip drove the floor but her layup came up short in the final seconds. Kelly was fouled with 0.1 on the clock and sank two free throws to complete the scoring and seal the win for the Lady Indians.

"We hung in there until the final horn blew," Holubek said. "I'm proud of all of them."

Calip led RHS with 19 points, including 17 in the second half and 10 in the fourth quarter, along with four rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot, while Mendenhall posted 12 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Kylee Hannahs totaled seven points, 10 rebounds, two steals, one assist and one blocked shot and Laino netted five points, six rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.

Kelly led Lawrenceville with 13 points, 13 rebounds, three blocked shots, two steals and two assists, while Osmon posted 11 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two assists and Higginbotham added 10 points, one rebound and one steal.

"Hopefully we can take some of this experience and build on it for next year," Holubek said. "We had some bright spots this season and we have some good kids coming back. With some dedication in the offseason, I think we can be competitive next season."

Robinson ended the season with a 5-16 record. Lawrenceville advances to play top-seeded and eighth-ranked Marshall in the semifinals tonight at 6, while second-seeded Newton and third-seeded Casey-Westfield will play in the second semifinal tonight at 7:30.
