Robinson High School's wrestling team had a strong finish to the end of the regular season Saturday.
The Maroons had six wrestlers place, including three champions, on their way to a fourth-place team finish at the 14-team Eastern Illinois Tournament at St. Joseph-Ogden High School.
Robinson collected 127 points, which placed them behind only champion and host St. Joseph-Ogden, who has 193.5, runner-up Champaign Central with 175 and Lawrenceville at 155. Rounding out the field were Cumberland (126), Olney (108), Oakwood-Fihian (102), Bismarck-Henning (94), Westville (76), Carterville (72), Hoopeston Area (70), Effingham (40), Rantoul (34) and Effingham St. Anthony (12).
Individually, Robinson had three first-place finishers and three third-place finishers among the 12 wrestlers that competed in the meet. Even though only six placed among the top-six in their respective weight classes, nine of the 12 Maroons won at least one match on the day.
Leading the way was Tanner Keeler at 220, who ripped through his division with three pinfall victories to claim the championship.
Keeler opened with a win over Oakwood-Fithian's Ronnie Violante in 1:13, then pinned St. Joseph-Ogden's Ryan Koss in 2:19 to reach the finals. In the title bout, Keeler pinned Lawrenceville's Trevor Richards in 3:36 to win the championship.
Payton Stifle was also dominant on his way to a championship at 113. The senior all-time wins leader at RHS spent just 3:26 on the mat during the tournament, winning both of his matches by pinfall. After receiving a bye into the semifinals, Stifle took down Hoopeston Area's Dylan Pate in 2:30, then pinned Champaign Central's JMillion Washington in 56 seconds to win the title.
Meanwhile, Andrew Gallagher had to work a little longer, but still finished the day undefeated. In his first match at 132, Gallagher scored a 5-2 win over Cumberland's Zach Brandenburg, then pinned Hoopeston Area's Gage Foster in 3:32 to reach the finals. In the title match, Gallagher beat Lawrenceville's Zach Kocher 6-2 to win the championship.
Also for RHS, Alec Keeler, Nick Berty and Nic Iovanac all finished third with 2-1 records.
At 126, Keeler started with a 7-3 win over Carterville's Brayden Drees, then was pinned by Oakwood-Fithian's Antonio Alvarez in 1:53. In the third-place match, Keeler rebounded to defeat St. Joseph-Ogden's David Trewyn, 10-9.
At 170, Berty opened with a pin of Lawrenceville's Jacob Wirth in 1:42, then was pinned by Bismarck-Henning's Jared Noel in 4:05. He bounced back in the third-place match with a narrow 9-8 win over Carterville's Joe Behan.
At 195, Iovanac pinned Olney's Craig Muhs in 16 seconds to start his day, then dropped a 9-2 decision to Champaign Central's Toby Rivera, before coming back to beat Cumberland's Timmy Carll, 7-2, in the third-place match.
Others to score wins for RHS included Austin VanSchoyck at 285, who scored a pin of St. Joseph-Ogden's Jacob Bowman in 3:24 to start his day, then lost his next two matches by decision, while Aaron Rankin picked up a pin of Effingham's Nathan Case in 32 seconds in between losses by decision and Dylan Dart sandwiched a win via pin over Oakwood-Fithian's Micheal Patton in 5:02 in between a pair of pinfall losses.
Wrestlers who competed for RHS but did not win included Kyle Langley at 106, Sam Cunningham at 138 and Curtis Herrington at 145.
Robinson will compete in the IHSA Class 1A Regional at Mt. Carmel Saturday at 9 a.m.
