It is not how many shots you take, it is how many you make.

Palestine-Hutsonville's girls' basketball team took that theory to heart Thursday night in their 64-53 win over visiting Cumberland in Little Illini Conference play.

The Lady Pioneers put up 67 shots in the win, while making 19 of them for a mere 31 percent. They also shot 35 free throws in the game, but made just 20 (57 percent). However, they made six more field goals than Cumberland did, which enabled them to pick up the win.

The two teams played virtually even in the first quarter, but Palestine-Hutsonville was able to pull out to an 11-9 lead at the end of the period. The Lady Pioneers broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring Cumberland 28-14 to take a 39-23 lead at halftime and coasted to the win. Cumberland outscored Palestine-Hutsonville 16-14 in the third quarter to close the gap to 53-39 and won the fourth quarter 14-11 to reach the final margin.

Among their 67 shots, 65 of the Lady Pioneers' attempts were from two-point range, where they hit 19 (29 percent), while they also made both of their three-point attempts. Meanwhile, Cumberland made just 15-49 shots from the floor (31 percent), including 12-45 from inside the arc (27 percent) and 3-4 from long distance (75 percent). Cumberland also made 20 free throws out of 27 attempts (74 percent), as they teams combined for 62 free throws and 53 fouls in the game.
