Panthers roll past Lawrenceville, 71-49

A big second-half surge proved to be the difference for Oblong High School's boys' basketball team Tuesday night.

The Panthers broke open a close game after halftime and pulled away from visiting Lawrenceville for a 71-49 victory in Little Illini Conference play, snapping a two-game losing streak in the process.

Oblong held a slim 9-7 lead after the first quarter, then outscored Lawrenceville 20-19 in the second quarter to hold a 29-26 edge at halftime. The Panthers outscored Lawrenceville 19-12 in the third quarter to extend their advantage to 48-38, then outscored the Indians 23-11 over the final eight minutes to put the game away.

Leading the charge for the Panthers was Anthony Johnson, who scored 23 of his game-high 37 points in the second half. The 6-4 senior made 11 field goals, including two from three-point range, and was 13-13 from the free throw line. After scoring just four points in the first quarter, Johnson netted 10 in the second quarter, then scored 12 in the third and 11 more in the fourth. He also collected 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Jared Mayhew also had a big game for the Panthers, posting 14 points, 11 rebounds, three blocked shots and one assist, while Gerald Richardson totaled eight points, 13 rebounds, four steals and three blocked shots. Brody Allen contributed eight points, three rebounds and two assists off the bench and Collin Meese added four points, two steals and two assists.

Lawrenceville was led by Austin Dorney with 12 points, while Brandt Cochran and Nate Ladson were also in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Oblong lost the junior varsity game, 68-42.

Mayhew led OHS with 10 points, while Allen tossed in eight. Michael Brown and Alec Jacobs netted seven points apiece, Kyler Fear and Tyler Woods each scored four points and Zander Laino and Tristan Woods added one point each.

Oblong (13-5, 4-2 LIC) will play at Flora for a LIC contest Friday at 6:15 p.m.
