Lady Pioneers fall to Lawrenceville

One bad quarter was enough to send Palestine-Hutsonville's girls' basketball team to a loss in their conference opener Monday night.

The Lady Pioneers won two quarters and played even in a third, but were outscored by 10 points in the second quarter by visiting Lawrenceville, which was enough for them to earn a 40-35 win in Little Illini Conference play.

The loss was the second straight for the Lady Pioneers and they both came in similar fashion.

Palestine-Hutsonville held an 11-10 edge after the first quarter, but Lawrenceville outscored the Lady Pioneers 18-8 in the second quarter to take a 28-19 lead at halftime. Each team scored eight points in the third quarter to make the score 36-27, then Palestine-Hutsonville outscored LHS 8-4 in the fourth quarter, but still came up short.

The Lady Pioneers struggled shooting the ball, making just 14-44 field goal attempts (31 percent), including 14-43 from two-point range (30 percent) and 1-1 from three-point range (100 percent). Lawrenceville was a bit better, making 18-36 shots from the floor (50 percent), all of which were two-pointers. Palestine-Hutsonville connected on 6-11 free throw attempts (54 percent), while Lawrenceville made 4-8 foul shots (50 percent).

Calee Fulling topped Palestine-Hutsonville with 12 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and one steal, while McKenna Elder posted seven points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Kiley Rariden netted six points and three rebounds, Leslie Churchwell contributed five points, four rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot, Emily Nehls added four points, three rebounds, one steal and one assist and Nicole Kiger had one point, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Leading the way for Lawrenceville was McKenzi Kelly with 12 points, seven rebounds, four steals, two assists and one blocked shot, while Kourtney Osmon posted 12 points, two rebounds and one steal.

Palestine-Hutsonville did score a 22-21 win in the junior varsity game. The Lady Pioneers trailed 6-4 after one quarter, but tied the game at 10-10 at halftime. Palestine-Hutsonville took a 16-14 lead into the fourth quarter and was able to hold on for the victory.

Elder led the Lady Pioneers with 10 points, two rebounds and one assist, while Rariden totaled eight points, six rebounds, one steal, one assist and one blocked shot and Carol Carnahan posted four points, nine rebounds, one steal and one assist.

Palestine-Hutsonville (3-4, 0-1 LIC) will play at Edwards County for a Little Illini Conference contest Thursday at 6:15 p.m.
