Maroons hold off Mt. Zion for 68-59 win
Sports Editor

Finding ways to win games is the goal for any team. The good ones can do it in several different ways.

Robinson High School's boys' basketball team has won both of their games so far this season in completely different fashions.

After suffocating Mattoon defensively in a 12-point win Tuesday night, the Maroons stepped things up on the offensive end Wednesday to fight off a game Mt. Zion team for a 68-59 win at the Effingham St. Anthony Thanksgiving Tournament.

The game was close throughout most of the contest, with the Maroons unable to put away the pesky Braves until late in the contest.

The lead changed hands six times and there were three ties in the first quarter, including at the end of the period when the teams were knotted at 13-13 after the first eight minutes.

That trend continued at the start of the second quarter, as the teams traded baskets early to make the score 15-15. Robinson then ripped off seven straight points to take a 22-15 lead, only to see Mt. Zion counter with a 10-0 run to grab a 25-22 lead with less than four minutes to play in the first half. However, Robinson came right back with another run, ripping off the final 11 points of the period - capped off by a three-pointer from Aaron Siler following a Mt. Zion turnover - to claim a 33-25 advantage at halftime.

Robinson never relinquished the lead again and was able to keep Mt. Zion at bay in the second half, but the Braves were able to stay within striking distance.

The Braves got to within six points early in the third period, but Robinson was able to grab their biggest lead of the game at 12, 48-36, after Derrick Nicholas scored five straight points late in the period. However, Mt. Zion scored the last four points of the quarter and trailed by just eight, 48-40, heading into the fourth quarter.

Four points by Austin Weck early in the period pushed the RHS lead back to 12, 52-40, but five straight points by Mt. Zion's Colton Calhoun closed the gap to 52-45 with 6:30 to play. The Braves would get to within five points on a couple of occasions in the fourth quarter, but Robinson was able to make enough free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

For the game, Robinson made 27-56 shots from the floor (48 percent), including 25-44 from two-point range (57 percent) and 2-12 from three-point range (17 percent), while Mt. Zion connected on 23-53 field goal attempts (43 percent), which included an 18-33 effort from inside the arc (55 percent) and a 5-20 performance from long distance (25 percent). The Maroons also held a slight edge at the free throw line, making 12-17 attempts (71 percent), while Mt. Zion made 8-11 foul shots (73 percent).

Leading the way for RHS was Nicholas, who posted his second double-double in as many nights with 30 points and 18 rebounds. He also recorded three steals, two blocked shots and one assist for the Maroons. Cory Blount posted 12 points, seven rebounds, four steals and two assists, Siler netted 11 points, two assists, one rebound, one steal and one blocked shot, Weck contributed eight points, five rebounds and one assist, Michael Akande added five points, one rebound, one assist and one steal and Landen Hoagland had two points, three assists and two rebounds.

Mt. Zion was led by Calhoun with 25 points, two assists and one steal, while Grant Pyatt totaled 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals, two blocked shots and one assist.

Also Tuesday, Effingham beat Charleston, 65-57 and Belleville Althoff defeated Effingham St. Anthony, 62-45.
