Robinson girls' tennis team edges Carmi, loses at Olney recently
Sports Editor

A lot of tennis has been played by Robinson High School's girls' tennis team in recent days, with mixed results.

Following a loss at Mt. Zion Saturday, the Lady Maroons pulled out a 5-4 win over Carmi in Mt. Carmel Monday, then lost at Olney Tuesday, 9-0.

On Monday, Robinson and Carmi split the six singles matches, but the Lady Maroons pulled out two wins in the three doubles contests to pick up the victory.

"We had a very competitive match with Carmi," RHS head coach John Ireland said.

Scoring wins in singles for RHS were Madison Buchanan at No. 2 over Francesca Dimaggio (10-1), Brittney Fuller over Kami Frymire at No. 3 (10-9(7-3)) and Emily Harp at No. 6 over MacKenzie Armstrong (10-4).

In doubles, Fuller and Buchanan teamed up at No. 1 to defeat Alexis McCarty and Dimaggio, 8-0, while Sierra Henry and Melissa Jenkins picked up an 8-6 win at No. 2 over Frymire and Armstrong to clinch the win for the Lady Maroons.

"We played a varsity match with freshmen through juniors and had two double winners," Ireland said. "Brittney and Madison both won their singles and doubles matches. They played a superior match in doubles. Emily played another great singles match with an impressive win. Sierra and Melissa finished off a close doubles match and were able to get the fifth win necessary for victory. The other singles and doubles matches were competitive and gave our kids valuable experience as we look into next year's tennis season.

At Olney, the closest the Lady Maroons came to a win was at No. 3 doubles, where Taylor Grove and Fuller dropped a three-set match to Sydney Shan and Cierra Hargraves, 3-6, 6-4, 13-11. The other eight matches were all decided in straight sets.

"The varsity match was tough," Ireland said. "Olney won the LIC and has a great team. We were able to hit with them in all our matches, but the experience level of many of their players can make a difference. Brittney and Taylor went three sets and had a back and forth super set, but ultimately lost, 13-11. They played an excellent match."

Robinson also got in 20 junior varsity matches Tuesday and picked up five wins.

Harp, Melissa Jenkins, Lillie Hargis and Kelsey Hetzler picked up wins in singles play, while Jordan Mikeworth and Tori Courtney got a win in doubles.

"The JV matches provided so much needed experience on the court tonight," Ireland said. "There is no substituting play and practice time and they were able to get in much of that tonight."

Robinson (7-7) will compete in the IHSA Sectional at Casey this weekend.
