Lady Tigers finish 6th in own tourney
| Things went from bad to worse for Hutsonville-Palestine's volleyball team Saturday.|
Already in the midst of a nine-match losing streak heading into Saturday's Hutsonville Invitational tournament, the Lady Tigers not only saw their losing skid extended, but they also became part of history.
Hutsonville-Palestine opened the day with two losses in pool play. The Lady Tigers lost to Dugger, Ind., in straight sets, then fell in three sets to Shiloh, 10-25, 25-20, 10-15.
As a result, Hutsonville-Palestine was relegated to the fifth-place match, where they took on Red Hill - a team they had beaten twice in close matches earlier this season.
Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, the third time was the charm for Red Hill, as they were able to outlast Hutsonville-Palestine for a three-set win, 20-25, 25-19, 15-8.
The victory was a historic one for Red Hill, as it was the first win for the Lady Salukis in nearly 10 years, snapping a losing streak of 203 consecutive matches. The last time Red Hill won before Saturday was Oct. 7, 2002.
"This was not our finest day coming out 0-3," HHS-PHS head coach Jolene Crippes-Callaway said. "We had flashes while using many players to try to find a combination to play together."
As for the rest of the tournament, Noble claimed the championship with a perfect 3-0 record. They defeated Red Hill and Lawrenceville in straight sets in pool play, then beat Shiloh - who had a perfect record in pool play with wins over Dugger and Hutsonville-Palestine - in straight sets, 25-16, 25-23, in the title match.
In the third-place match, Dugger defeated Lawrenceville in three sets, 22-25, 25-22, 15-7.
"On the good side, we are expanding to an eight-team tourney next year and are trying to get our numbers to a 10-team tourney for future years," Crippes-Callaway said. "We started as a four-team tourney, then moved last year to six, so at least we are headed in the right direction."
Hutsonville-Palestine (3-17) will start a busy week tonight when they travel to Chrisman for a non-conference contest at 6:15 p.m. The Lady Tigers will also play host to Casey-Westfield and at Lawrenceville Thursday in Little Illini Conference play.
