Unit 2 talking about 'positive' behavior plan
A proposal to provide increased behavioral help at a younger age is being considered by the Robinson Unit 2 school board.

A group of elementary educators brought the proposal to start a PASS - Positive Approach to Student Success - program here to the board during its meeting Tuesday at Nuttall Middle School.

Unit 3 board will apply for maintenance grant
The Palestine Unit 3 School Board Tuesday night started working on plans to help with maintenance projects in the district.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Jo Campbell told the board that after discussions with the district's architect, custodian and others, they believe the time is right to apply for an Illinois School Maintenance Project Grant.

IECC survey shows those working at area colleges 'satisfied' with jobs
Illinois Eastern Community Colleges' employees are pleased with their workplaces, according to the results of an annual survey.

Results of the Employee Satisfaction Survey for fiscal 2019 were presented to the IECC Board of Trustees Tuesday during a meeting at Wabash Valley College, Mt. Carmel.

Demand easing gas price, tensions may increase it
Low demand, especially in the Midwest, has been driving gasoline prices down recently, but actions in the Middle East could still rock the market.

Illinois gas prices have fallen 9.8 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.51 per gallon today, according to a daily survey of 4,378 stations by the GasBuddy analysis service. Gas prices in Illinois are 0.9 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 41.3 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

Watershed-plan meetings Jan. 30
Farmers and landowners in the Embarras River Watershed have the opportunity to take part in water quality discussions ahead of an update to the river's watershed plan.

Two meetings are planned for the Crawford County area. Both are Thursday, Jan. 30. The first is 8 to 10 a.m. at the Jasper County Farm Bureau, 105 S. Hutton Drive, Newton. The second is 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Clark County Farm Bureau, 9 Trotter Lane, Martinsville.

After '19 losses, farmers facing another soaking
The state's climatologist is predicting Illinois farmers are likely to endure more burdensome wet weather while they try to plant cash crops this spring after suffering major losses as a result of a record-wet planting season last year.

April through June is likely to be wetter than normal in Illinois, according to rainfall projections from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, posing a challenge to corn and soybean farmers in the heart of planting season.

CMH board OKs closing Magnolia Center
Employees and residents of Crawford Memorial Hospital's Magnolia Center learned Thursday that the 50-year-old skilled care facility will be closing.

Chief Executive Officer Doug Florkowski was to meet with workers and residents Thursday and plans to continue meeting with concerned parties, including relatives and caregivers, in the next week.

H'ville to limit parking of semis
Tractor-trailers will no longer be allowed to park overnight in residential areas of the Village of Hutsonville.

After discussion the issue for several months, village trustees voted to prohibit parking semis in residential areas - tractors, trailers or both - unless they are inside a covered and enclosed building. Semis may park in commercial areas or at the parking lot next to the bridge when space allows.

City to work with resident with pool-related drainage issue
Concerns about drainage problems at her home prompted a Robinson resident to speak to the Robinson City Council Tuesday night.

Cathy Blaha, a lifelong Robinson resident, informed the council that her home on Fairway Drive has flooding in the backyard because of a neighbor's pool. Blaha moved to the residence last June.

Only a select few basketball programs in the state of Illinois can boast they are among the leaders in all-time wins, but Robinson High School can consider themselves among that class.

The Maroons posted their 1,500th win in program history Friday night, thanks to a 51-28 conquest of Flora in Little Illini Conference action.

Visitors restricted at hospital as flu cases rise locally
An increase in the number of area influenza cases has prompted Crawford Memorial Hospital to implement visitor restrictions.

CMH has been monitoring the incidence of area flu cases. Officials decided Friday to proactively implementing visitor limitations to help protect our patients, staff and the community from the spread of the disease.

Woman hurt in car-theft incident
The Crawford County Sheriff's Department is investigating how a reported stolen vehicle ended up in Hutson Creek at the bridge along Illinois Route 1 this morning.

According to reports, sheriff's deputies responded to a call of an injured woman and stolen vehicle at 12985 N. State Highway 1, around 2:09 a.m. Sunday.

No restrictions here yet because of flu outbreak
It's a new year with new worries about the flu.

Health officials in Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky are warning residents of a widespread influenza outbreak, with some Hoosier hospitals already placing restrictions on visitors.

That has not happened here, however; Crawford Memorial Hospital is monitoring the flu situation but has not established any restrictions on visiting patients.

Ind. boater last seen at H'ville is found today
An Indiana man is safe and sound after being sought by authorities on both sides of the Wabash River.

Hoosier authorities located James B. Hand, 59, Sullivan, Ind., about 10:30 a.m. Illinois time. He had been reported missing about 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Hand was last seen in a canoe on the Wabash, just south of Hutsonville. Later, however, his canoe and campsite on the river were discovered deserted.
