Robinson man to get 25 years for conviction of child sex assault
A Robinson man will spend the next 25 years of his life prison after being found guilty of a child sex crime.

Crawford County State's Attorney Matthew Hartrich announced Monday that Alfred Waldrop, 56, was sentenced to the Illinois Department of Corrections for the felony offense of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child.

Unit 3 members sworn in; Biggs still president
In their first meeting since the Crawford County Clerk's Office announced the official results of the recent consolidated election, the Palestine Unit 3 school board seated a new member and re-organized Monday.

Board members Corie Biggs, Tara Vennard, Don Wagoner, Jeff Besing and newly-elected J.R. Dunlap were sworn in by vice president Shari Eckert.

Circuit Judge Mark M. Boie of the First Judicial Circuit has been assigned as an Appellate Court Justice in the Fifth District.

The Fifth Judicial District is composed of 37 counties in the southernmost part of Illinois, including Crawford, Jasper and Lawrence.

Local spring cleanups start this week
Local communities are gearing up for their annual spring cleanup days.

In Robinson, city workers will pick up yard waste April 29 to May 3. Republic Services will collect other items on paid customers' regular pickup days May 6 to 10.

United Way helps make author's visit possible
Local elementary and middle school students will have a chance to learn about writing from a nationally-known author during a three-day visit here.

Jordan Sonnenblick will conduct writers' workshops and make presentations to local students at Lincoln Trail College Tuesday, April 30 through Thursday, May 2.

LTC Foundation to award more than $130K
The Lincoln Trail College Foundation will again provide thousands of dollars in assistance to LTC students in the coming academic year.

The foundation will award more than $130,351 in scholarships to students for the 2019-20 school year, Executive Director Rod Harmon said. It will also provide $16,000 to $17,000 to cover the cost of dual credit courses for students from Crawford County's four high schools.

IECC approves adding 11 acres for sport facility
Lincoln Trail College can move ahead with a planned outdoor sports complex and renovations to the Zwermann Arts Center Theater following action by the Illinois Eastern Community College District Board Tuesday.

The trustees, meeting at LTC, accepted a donation from the Lincoln Trail Foundation of 11 acres west of the baseball diamond.

As Crawford Memorial Hospital's fiscal year draws to a close, finances again were a prime topic of discussion at Wednesday's CMH board meeting.

The annual capital and operations budgets were adopted, as was the annual appropriations ordinance.

A new teacher, a new school resource officer, a new administrator and a new class are among the items Robinson Unit 2 is looking at for the upcoming school year.

Unit 2 board members Monday reviewed ideas presented by the program evaluation committee to consider for inclusion in next year's budget.

Robinson area parents of children between the ages of three and five looking for comprehensive preschool services can sign up for ERBA Head Start next week.

Sign-up for the program is 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at the ERBA office, 100 S. Washington, Robinson. Head Start staff members will be on hand to answer questions.

Postal carriers send message on dog bites
Local mail carriers want to deliver a special message to dog owners about keeping their pets under control.

This is National Dog Bite Prevention Week. According to the U.S. Postal Service, 5,714 postal employees were victimized by dogs last year. When a dog attacks a letter carrier, the dog owner could be held liable for all medical expenses, repayment of lost work hours, replacement of the uniform and other costs, which can run into thousands of dollars.

Winter chill lingered in March here, local statistics show
Crawford County was dryer and cooler in March than it was a year ago.

According to the National Weather Service, 2.70 inches of rain and more than 1.6 inches of snow was reported in the county during March.

Dog owner faces charge after bite
Crawford County Animal Control was dispatched to the 200 block of East Franklin, Palestine, Friday, along with Palestine Police Department, after receiving a complaint of a dog bite near Palestine High School.

According to Chief Jeff Besing, he arrived about 12:55 p.m. and discovered a male student had been bitten on the left upper thigh by a brindle-colored pit bull.

Sheriff's group misrepresented by scammers
The Illinois Sheriff's Association is advising all Illinois county residents that there is currently underway a phone campaign fraudulently using the name and phone numbers of the Illinois Sheriff's Association.

The Sheriff's Association never solicits by phone but does conduct a direct mail campaign throughout the state endorsed by individual sheriffs.

Hootenanny events, budget OK'd by Oblong
The Oblong Village Board Wednesday night approved a budget, a beer garden and preparing for spring cleanup.

The board approved an annual budget of $1,262,498. 33. That number is up about $75,000 over last year. Mayor Teresa Fielder said the purchase of a backhoe and other items are part of that increase. The board also approved a $45,000 resolution on street and highway maintenance that will be funded by Motor Fuel Tax funds from the state.
