By DAILY NEWS STAFF
Robinson High School JILG students are doing their part to help Daily News Sports Editor Tim Brooks.
Seniors in the Jobs for Illinois Graduates program are conducting a fundraiser to help pay medical expenses for Brooks, who is recovering from surgery for bleeding in his brain. Besides being a Daily News employee, the RHS graduate is also the school's freshman-sophomore softball coach.
"We're trying to teach the kids how to give back to the community and become better citizens," JILG teacher Bob Duzan said. "If there's a need, you have a responsibility to help. We want to help however we can."
Duzan said there is a lot of support in the community, which made the fundraiser possible.
Participants in the event will have a chance to win two halves of a hog donated by Scott Long and processed by Stork's Custom Butchering, Palestine. Long also donated a second hog that will be turned into porkburgers and sold downtown to raise more money for Brooks sometime in October.
Other prizes include four basketballs autographed by University of Illinois coach Bruce Weber, four tickets to a pre-season U of I game and three Six Flags tickets.
Tickets for the fundraiser are available by contacting Duzan at RHS, 544-9510, and at the RHS homecoming football game at 1 p.m. Saturday. Prizes will be awarded following halftime. Students will also be taking donations for Brooks during the game.
Brooks returned to Evansville for additional treatment Tuesday, but is now home.
