The Crawford County Sheriff's Department is investigating how a reported stolen vehicle ended up in Hutson Creek at the bridge along Illinois Route 1 this morning.
According to reports, sheriff's deputies responded to a call of an injured woman and stolen vehicle at 12985 N. State Highway 1, around 2:09 a.m. Sunday. Brittany A. Smith, (no age listed), Hammond, Ind., reported that around 2 a.m. she left the residence to retrieve clothing from her vehicle. When she opened the passenger side door she discovered a unknown male sitting in the driver seat. The driver then drove off, dragging and possible running over Smith.
Smith was taken to Crawford Memorial Hospital with unknown injuries for evaluation and possible transfer to another hospital.
The vehicle was later found early this morning in Hutson Creek abandoned, and reported to the Sheriff's Department. It appears the vehicle went off the west side of the road, traveled down the bank and into the creek.
Crawford County Chief Deputy Doug Slater said they are continuing to investigate.
