Oblong schools will now allow children of employees who don't live in the district to attend school without paying tuition.
The waiver had been under consideration by the district for several years as a tool to attract new teachers to the district, Unit 4 Superintendent Jeff Patchett has noted that with the current teacher shortage, to lose any teachers puts the district in a bind. Administrators and the school board hope this will make the district a better draw for potential new teachers even if they don't choose to live within the district for whatever reason.
The board also approved the 2019 tax levy, which includes taxes levied to pay bonds and interest.
The levy includes $1,100,000 for the educational fund, $111,000 for transportation, $44,210 and $53,210 for social security. It also sets aside $526,152 for bond and interest payments.
In other business, the board amended 2020 school calendar and approved the updated list for substitute teachers, aides, bus drivers, cooks and custodians.
In personnel matters, the board approved a letter of resignation from Donna Chiddix to retire at the end of the 2022-23 school year.
The board also approved the High School Chorus request to attend All-State Conference in Peoria Jan. 29 through Feb. 1,
The next regular school board meeting will be Thursday, Jan. 23 at 6 p.m. in the Oblong Elementary Oblong Room.
