Three young men have decided to take their love for outdoor basketball and put it to use for a good cause this weekend.

Throughout the warmer months, numerous pickup basketball games are played on Randy's Court, adjacent to Nuttall Middle School in Robinson.

Some local basketball enthusiasts have gone so far as to create their own league and through that, a few of those players - Robinson High School and Lincoln Trail College graduates Brady Clampet, Joey Wright and Cameron Ireland - spawned the idea of hosting a three-on-three tournament at Randy's Court, while a few others pitched in along the way to help make the idea a reality.

The three gained numerous sponsorships from area businesses to help cover expenses and provide prizes for the top teams of the tournament, which includes $250 plus gift cards to area businesses to the winner.

"We really appreciate all the help from our sponsors," Clampet said. "Without it, this wouldn't have been possible."

Originally, the plan was to take the money made from the tournament and hand it over for upkeep and upgrades to Randy's Court, but when they found out money wasn't needed for those things, they found another cause they believed needed the support.

The money raised from the event will now go to The Ark of the Covenant Soup Kitchen in Robinson.

"Not too many people are even aware that a soup kitchen exists here and we felt like it was a good cause to support," Clampet said. "We are glad we can help them provide the services they wish to provide to the community."

Through the work of these three and the power of social media, this event has the makings to be quite the spectacle.

A total of 34 teams have signed up to play, many of which are local or from the surrounding area, but some coming from as far as Effingham, Bloomington, Ind. and Evansville.

The double-elimination tournament starts at 2 p.m. Saturday, with check-in from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. The event is open to the public and spectators can make freewill donations at the event. In conjunction, Monical's is hosting community days on Saturday and Sunday, with 20 percent of patrons' bills going to the soup kitchen if you wear a Randy's Court T-shirt when you go to eat. Shirts will be available for sale at the three-on-three tournament.

"We encourage people to come out and watch some good basketball," Clampet said. "But we also encourage people to come out and help us support a good cause."
