Little fieldwork getting done yet this crop season
Corn and soybean planting continue to progress slowly across the state.

Little could be accomplished last week, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture; there was less than a single day suitable for fieldwork last week.

Statewide, the average temperature was 55.9 degrees, 1.3 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 3.22 inches, 2.33 inches above normal.

Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 26 percent adequate and 74 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 34 percent adequate and 66 percent surplus.

Corn planted reached 10 percent compared to 68 percent last year and 66 percent for the five-year average. Corn emerged reached 2 percent compared to 12 percent last year.

Illinois isn't alone in falling behind. Most corn-growing states are well behind where they were at this point in 2018 and the five-year average.

Indiana, for example, reports only 3 percent of its corn has been planted, compared to 37 percent last year and the average of 35 percent.

Other states, such as Iowa and Missouri, are farther along than Illinois, but still behind 2018.

Soybeans planted was 3 percent compared to 26 percent last year and 16 percent for the average.

Again, more than half the states that grow soybeans are behind schedule. Indiana growers have seeded only 1 percent of the crop. This is down from 20 percent last year and the average of 12 percent.

Meanwhile, winter wheat headed was 9 percent, compared to 13 percent last year and the average of 32 percent.

Wheat condition was rated 6 percent very poor, 14 percent poor, 42 percent fair, 33 percent good and 5 percent excellent.
