Area community-college board approves district's tax levies
Illinois Eastern Community College trustees have approved the district's annual tax levies.

Originally proposed in October, the 2018-19 levies were certified by trustees during their meeting Wednesday at Wabash Valley College, Mount Carmel. A public hearing on the levies preceded the regular meeting.

The estimated tax levy is almost $4.92 million. This is up from more than $4.75 million last year. There is also an extension for bond and interest payments of nearly $2.2 million, up from $2.14 million last year. The total levy is almost $7.1 million.

IECC Chief Executive Officer Terry Bruce said last month he expects the actual levies will be somewhat lower than estimated.

College and school districts usually base levies on EAV estimates that are set intentionally high. Districts can not collect on amounts higher than their estimates.

There is no change in IECC's tax rates, which have remained the same since 1965.

Also Tuesday, the board approved an increase in tuition for international students. The rate per semester hour for international students will be $341.51 and the rate per semester hour for second-year international students will be $230.

Trustees postponed consideration of a proposal by the Lawrence County Board to abate property taxes for 10 years on residential and certain commercial properties until more details are received.

In personnel matters, Stephanie Nutall was employed as Title III project director, effective Monday. Wendy Coles and Calvin Melvin were employed as workforce education instructors, effective Jan. 2 abd 7, respectively.

Change in status was approved for two current employees.

Alyssa Maglone will become the coordinator of Curricular Reporting and Articulation at the district office, effective Monday. She was previously administrative assistant to the Olney Central College dean.

Taryn Bunting will go from administrative assistant at OCC to being the college's coordinator of financial aid, effective today.

The resignation of WVC Assistant Professor Laura Bruck was accepted.

Updates were approved to the substance abuse policy that continues the prohibition of use of certain recently Illinois-approved drugs that are not approved at the federal level.

This revision will ensure continued adherence to federal law.

Affiliation agreements were approved for the Phlebotomy Program with Hamilton Memorial Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes and for the Basic Nurse Assistant Program with Aperion Care in Bridgeport.

The holiday calendar for administrative, technical, professional non-faculty, clerical and maintenance personnel was approved for 2019. The schedule is the same as in previous years.

The next regular board meeting is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Frontier Community College, Fairfield.
