The holiday season is upon us, with Robinson getting a head start on things with its "Bringing Back Christmas Magic" celebration this weekend.
Activities get underway with a Christmas tree lighting on the Crawford County Courthouse square beginning at 4 p.m. Friday. Santa will be in his Kringle Korner house and the tree will be lit at 7 p.m.
The Robinson Chamber of Commerce will have a silent auction of Christmas trees decorated by businesses and individuals during the celebration in the building next to the First Financial Bank. The money will be split between
the Fall Follies and Christmas Committee.
The celebration continues with a free breakfast with Santa from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Masonic Lodge.
The Crawford County Historical Society is having a holiday soup supper beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 408 S. Cross, Robinson. Doors open at 2 p.m. The menu will be broccoli and cheese soup and chili. A free will donation will be taken.
The Festival of Lights parade starts at Robinson City Park and heads north on South Cross at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Also Saturday, Hutsonville High School will have its 120th year alumni reunion beginning at 6 p.m. in the Hutsonville Elementary School gymnasium.
There will be a Christmas holiday buffet from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Robinson Elks Lodge.
The Oblong Fireman's Association will present a singspiration of gospel music at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Oblong Fire Station. The evening will be hosted by Bro. Joe Griffith, assisted by Bro. Bill and Teresa Ikemire with music presented by musicians and singers of Crawford and Jasper counties.
Free will donations will be accepted for the music. Sandwiches will be sold by the Fireman's Association. Proceeds will benefit the Christmas for Kids Program.
The Palestine Preservation Projects Society's annual Cookie Walk starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, and continues until noon or the cookies are gone.
A variety of decorated Thanksgiving and Christmas cookies and pastries will be on sale at the Fife Opera House, 123 S. Main, Palestine. The event is a PPPS traditional fundraiser. Proceeds will be used to support the Fife Opera House and PPPS projects.
A Palestine community free Thanksgiving dinner is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day at Outer West Market Church of Christ, 803 W. Market, Palestine. Participating churches are Palestine First Christian, Palestine First Presbyterian, Palestine First United Methodist and Outer West Market Church of Christ.
The annual Lighting of the Park is Nov. 29 at Leaverton Park, Palestine.
Crawford County 4-H will have a Santa workshop to make holiday gifts from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 5, at the Cooperative Extension Service office in the Commercium. They will be decorating pillows for service members overseas.
Indiana Rail Road's Santa Train will arrive in Crawford County on Dec. 8. The train will stop in Oblong from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and Palestine from 1 to 2 p.m.
The Crawford County Business Women's holiday home show is from 2 to 4 p.m. Dec. 8. The tours will leave from the Robinson Community Center and tickets are $10. The three homes on the tour are Glenn Lattz and Linda Shidler at 806 W. Main St., Roger and Debbie Pethtel at 602 E. Walnut St. and Greg and Carolyn Utterback at 5927 E. 1200th Ave.
Final judging for the annual home decorating contest will be Dec. 9. Residents can turn in their ballots for first, second and third place at the chamber office on the square.
Local schools are preparing for their annual holiday concerts. Washington Elementary School will have three concerts, all at Highland Church of Christ. The second-grade program is 7 p.m. Dec. 2, the first-graders will have their show at 7 p.m. Dec. 5 and the kindergartners will perform at 7 p.m. Dec. 12.
The Lincoln Elementary School fifth-grade band concert is 6 p.m. Dec. 3 in the LES gym. Lincoln third-graders will perform a holiday concert in the Nuttall Middle School gym at 6 p.m. Dec. 9.
NMS will be the site of its own band and choir program at 7 p.m. Dec. 17. Robinson High School's annual Fine Arts Night is planned for Dec. 11. The time will be announced.
Hutsonville Elementary School will have a Christmas concert featuring students in pre-K through fifth grade at 7 p.m. Dec. 12. The Hutsonville junior-high/high school band concert is 2 p.m. Dec. 15.
The Palestine Grade School Christmas concert is 1:30 p.m. Dec. 12 and includes pre-K students. The Palestine Unit 3 holiday band concert is 7 p.m. Dec. 15.
Oblong Elementary School students in kindergarten through second grade will perform at 9 a.m. Dec. 17. A program featuring students in grades three through five follows at 2 p.m. The junior-high band concert is 7 p.m. Dec. 10 and the Oblong High School band concert is 2 p.m. Dec. 15. All shows at in the OES gym.
A holiday concert featuring the Lincoln Trail College jazz band, concert choir and Statesman Singers is planned for Nov. 22 in the Zwermann Arts Center Theater.
