The man authorities say burned down a rural Trimble hog-barn has been charged.
Craig A. Fuller, 31, rural Palestine, was charged with arson and criminal damage to more than $100,000 in property using fire. Both are Class 2 felonies.
Fuller allegedly started the fire at the barn at 13500 N. 1500th St. about 11:30 p.m. Thursday. He was arrested near the scene. Although a suspect in other area fires, Fuller, who is a LaMotte Township Fire Protection District firefighter, has not been charged in those instances.
The building was a complete loss, despite efforts from LaMotte firefighters, Hutsonville Fire Protection District and tanker trucks from across the county.
LaMotte Fire Chief Gene Purcell said he wasn't willing to risk any firefighters inside the building. The floor is concrete over the waste tanks for the pigs. He was concerned that the heated concrete would snap and send a firefighter into the pit below. A number of pigs met that fate - some surviving, others drowning.
Fuller's first court appearance is 9:30 a.m. June 7 in the Crawford County Courthouse.
