3/1/2006 4:29:00 PM Unit 1 board "forward-thinking"
As I read Tom Compton's report on the Hutsonville Unit I school board meeting (Feb. 21 Daily News), two items caught my attention that, in my opinion, are deserving of additional comment.
I want to commend the decision by Superintendent Eddy and the Unit I school board for their decision to refrain from starting classes in mid-August. For years, school districts have been gradually encroaching into the August period, creating a less-than-ideal learning environment due to weather, family vacations and other related issues. I submit that this decision is representative of efforts to create an improved educational environment for our children.
Secondly, as a taxpayer in the Hutsonville Unit I district, I found it very refreshing to see the proactive stance taken by Superintendent Eddy regarding the gym floor issue. How often through the years have we seen similar problems arise in our communities - but only after the bill has been paid and any leverage for achieving satisfaction has been significantly reduced or lost. Again, I commend the superintendent and the board for their alertness in catching this problem at a stage where it can hopefully be addressed, thus possibly saving taxpayers untold future dollars to correct a problem years later.
I appreciate this type of oversight and forward thinking, and I appreciate the efforts of Superintendent Eddy and the Hutsonville School Board on both fronts.
