Supporting proposed county gun-rights action

I am writing this letter to exercise my First Amendment rights and to express my Second Amendment rights position.

I just came from a meeting of the Eastern Illinois Sportsman's Club.  I am, however,  writing this letter to the editor for myself and not as an EISC member.  I found out tonight the EISC is presenting a resolution to the county board at its next meeting concerning the Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.  For those who don't know what that covers - it's your gun rights.

I won't go into the details of the resolution, but basically it's for the county to oppose the State of Illinois passing laws which infringe on the Second Amendment rights of the people of Crawford County.  There is a lot of legal jargon in the amendment which will probably discussed and since I'm not a lawyer I'll leave that to others.  I do, however, have an opinion.

There is an old saying that those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it; and this is something that greatly concerns me about the people of the United States.  Many think of history as a class they were forced to take in school.  A class they didn't really like so they didn't pay a lot attention.  So, to exercise my First Amendment right, here's a history lesson.  Every country on earth that wanted to subjugate its citizens first took away their weapons.  Then when they couldn't defend themselves and fight back they took away their freedom of speech. (Please - all you history teachers out there - don't call and try to argue with your personal opinions.  Write a letter to the editor.)

Now on the Second Amendment.  I am not a member of the NRA.  I do support common-sense gun controls but to some, common-sense means passing every little nit-pick law to whittle away at the right of honest citizens.  This seems to be a daily pastime in Springfield, Cook County and Chicago in particular.  I frequently read of someone trying to pass a bill or tack on a resolution to please some of their high-dollar donors which likely would have no impact, except to generate reelection money.  My fear is that while some of these bills seem good (in spirit) they are worthless as no criminal is going to follow the law anyway.  They just infringe upon the rights of the honest citizen.

I plan on attending the county board meeting to support the resolution.  I would hope that anyone who cares about keeping their Second Amendment rights would want to show up and exercise their First Amendment rights.  If you don't care about either of these rights, however, just stay home and watch reruns on TV.

Oh, and by the way - please vote in the November elections.  Some of your rights may depend on you being there.
