RE-NEW (Recovery Excellence through Nurture, Education and Work) is just ending its third year as an active participant providing support and fundraising for the Crawford County Drug Court. The drug court is a two-year program that requires frequent drug testing, treatment, counseling and work. We are just now preparing for the graduation of our fourth candidate. Each of those that have completed the course are now gainfully employed and are responsible citizens contributing to our community. When we look at what the alternative for these people would have been (a prison term at a cost of approximately $20,000 per year per inmate), we rejoice in the success of these people. It has required much commitment and effort on the part of each of them.
The state provides no funding for this. We have been able to receive a grant and also many local donations. The Crawford County Board has added a fee to some fines which generates some money but not enough to meet all the needs of the program. Through the grant we were able to purchase a drug-testing machine that provides immediate and accurate results. This has provided a good service to our clients and the staff. We have helped defray treatment costs and some personal expenses for the clients when special needs arise. We have five clients in the program now and hope to increase that number as funding and staffing permits.
We have been pleased to have local businesses willing to give our clients a chance to be employed but are always looking for more job opportunities. Anyone with a potential job opportunity should contact our probation officer, Stevi Holscher at 5442575.
We have a great committee who, as one said at our meeting last month, have "a passion for this program." But we always can use more hands and minds. As well, we are always in need of more funds - treatment is expensive but well worth the cost.
Anyone interested in joining our group should contact Shirley Treadway at 544-3997 or Bev Turkal at 544-3183. Any group wishing for RE-NEW to provide a presentation about our program should also call one of these numbers. RE-NEW is always happy to have donations. We are, registered as a nonprofit organization and donations may be mailed to RE-NEW, PO Box 678, 101 E. Walnut, Robinson, IL 62454.
