LTC athletics deserve support of community

This coming Monday, March 4, Robinson's very own Lincoln Trail Statesmen men's basketball team will be hosting the regional tournament on the home floor. This will provide an excellent opportunity for the community at large to come out in support of the Statesmen.

I have been a fan for the better part of the past seven years. My participation began when I became a host family for international students attending LTC. The boys have enjoyed watching our team through several seasons; and it has provided them the opportunity to make lasting friendships, while at the same time being able to see some awesome basketball ... all right here in our own back yard.

Coach Mike Ray, along with his fine coaching staff, stepped in with a whole new program this season. This group of young athletes began the season finding the proper fit on the floor. As the season has progressed, it has been a pleasure to see five individuals on a wood floor ... become a fine team in an arena they can now call their own.

You should also know the members of this squad are local and regional, from such known close-to-home places as Flora, Terre Haute, Evansville .... Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky.

I have watched these guys progress every step of the way, learning from mistakes. Isn't this how each of us went from being a kid, to becoming an adult? Athletes are no different.

We all have a desire to be part of something larger than the individual... part of a team, if you will. Being a fan of the home team Lincoln Trail Statesmen has allowed me to be an integral part, having a "piece of the action." I have enjoyed every moment, and am so very proud of my team!

Why not take just a few hours of your time next Monday? Get in your car, truck, SUV - and bring a friend! These young men have worked so very hard. They have gone toe to toe with the likes of Vincennes University, and let me tell you this team of ours is the real deal! The LTC Statesmen have never left anything on the floor - 100 percent, all the way!

The only thing missing is you, the fan! I will promise this team of ours will not disappoint. You and I are the "sixth man" needed to give these guys a return on the joy they have brought their fans this year. Please come out to support your Lincoln Trail Statesmen this coming Monday, March 4, 7:30 p.m. A community this large should be able to pack this gym!

If I can drive from Lawrenceville after putting in an eight hour day, you can do the same from where you live.

Bring your kids, too! Show them there is real life away from the iPhone. Turn off the TV and become a part of the team! It is time to cheer and shout. Along the way, you may just come away with a few new friends. I know I have. Statesmen basketball is addicting, as it should be. As the old saying goes; "try it ... you'll like it!"
