I am writing to ask for community support in regards to your local Agency on Aging and senior centers. The proposed sequestration effective March 1 will have catastrophic occurrences for our nine-county region. For several years it has been proposed and reproposed to issue cuts to our agency and in turn the senior centers; this has been avoided different times, but unfortunately looks to take effect on March 1.
The purpose of this sequestration proposed by government has been a concern for quite some time due to budgets and to find a reduction in spending. This comes at a great loss for our region and needs to be stopped. If this sequestration begins as it is proposed, there will be fewer meals served at a senior center, transportation cut, less staff available for resources, less in resources to offer, support groups will suffer for grandparents raising grandchildren and elder-abuse services will face cuts.
The AAA and senior centers have suffered many cuts in the past years without any new increases in funding from those cuts. We must act now to show the need of our valuable resources to the region. We fear if this isn't made known to your local representatives, congressmen and senators, these services may eventually become a thing of the past.
