Three dead in I-55 plane crash

Plane crashes on I-55

Illinois State Police confirmed that three men were killed in a plane crash on Interstate-55 in Logan County Tuesday.

Dead are pilot Mitchell W. Janssen, 22, Princeville, and two passengers, Matthew R. Hanson, 33, Pulaski, Wis., and Kevin G. Chapman, 30, Urbana.

According to the ISP, the small airplane took off from the Central Illinois Regional Airport in Bloomington. It crashed into the middle of the highway at milepost 126 at Lincoln about 8:50 a.m.

The plane burst into flame, immediately becoming fully engulfed.

The interstate was closed for several hours. Normal traffic flow resumed at about 2:30 p.m.

Multiple agencies were called to the scene to assist and the Federal Aviation Administration is expected to conduct a full investigation.

Initial reports said there were several people aboard the plane but gave no details about their conditions.
