When you mix some chemicals with water (above), they build up gas and can't be contained. Seventh-graders learned about this concept during the Science Safari held in the Robinson Community Center Thursday, and sponsored by local companies and the University of Illinois Extension Service.

Citizens' information helps in Palestine arrests
The arrests of two people made last month in Palestine would not be possible without the aid of some anonymous citizens.

In December the village's Saratoga Tavern was found broken into with an undetermined amount of alcohol and cash missing. Chief Jeff Besing asked the public for help and announced that Crawford County Crimestoppers would reward any with information leading to the thieves arrest a total of $300.

Winter Wonderland
Winter Wonderland
Two sledders make their way up the sledding hill at Washington Park Saturday. Dozens of local residents descended on the park following the first major snowfall of the winter. They might be in for a repeat this weekend, with up to two more inches expected by Saturday and a drop in temperatures ensuring it will stick around a while. (Randy Harrison photo)

Lady Panthers thump Lady Pioneers, 45-15
The rematch went much like the initial meeting between county rivals.

Oblong and Palestine-Hutsonville's girls' basketball teams met for the second time this season and the outcome Monday night (Jan. 14) was very similar to their first meeting.

The Lady Panthers jumped out to a big lead early and cruised to a 45-15 win over the Lady Pioneers in their opening round game of the Little Okaw Valley Conference Southeast Division Tournament at Martinsville.

It was the fifth straight win for the third-seeded Lady Panthers, while the sixth-seeded Lady Pioneers are still looking for their first victory of the season.

When most folks think of the Illinois oil industry, they likely associate Crawford County with the Marathon refinery in Robinson. And rightfully so. The facility employs about 690 people and refines 245,000 barrels of oil per day.

But not to be forgotten is the contribution Crawford County's storied oil production industry continues to make to the local economy and the critical role it plays in providing much-needed funding to the county's public schools.
